            How do our days connect?

The earth... A forest of pine... Summer rains... Sharing with family and friends... Your fresh Grandmother's pancakes, her smile...

Psalm 101, 1-3

Of David. A psalm.

I will sing of your love and justice;

to you, Lord, I will sing praise.

I will be careful to lead a blameless life. When will you be with me again?

I will conduct the affairs of my

house with a blameless heart. I will not look with approval on anything that is vile.

Following three months of rain, these July days are hot, mostly cloudy, and filled with the sounds of yard work. Gardens have been offering broccoli, peas, and lettuce, while the potatoes, beets, carrots, and peppers soak up sun and water for a later harvest. Three- to five-year-old children play in the wading pool across the street with moms and older siblings; their laughter and squeals fill the air with surprise. Farther back from the pool, older children fly back and forth on forty-year-old swings. In the evening, families picnic under gazebos and younger trees, their stems clustered with leaves, in cool shade.

Last night was a restless sleep, taking on the needs of two cats who were too hot. This morning, my task was to add shelf backs to a small bookshelf for our library—a stand-alone building with ~2,500 books and room for interviews and podcats. The library is also a quiet space to reduce my field notes, find related articles in the published literature, and write. Currently, I'm researching second- and third-generation residents to understand and publish two or three papers on generational culture in rural towns.
